주파수, 주기, 파장 파가 1초 동안 진동하는 회수를 주파수(Frequency)라고 한다. 또, 1회 반복하는데 걸리는 시간을 주기(Period)라고 한다. 따라서 주기는 주파수의 역수이다. 예를 들면 1,000Hz의 음의 주기는 0.001초(1/1000)이다. 즉 1000Hz의 음은 1초간에 1000번 진동하고, 1번 진동하는데 0.001초(1ms) 걸린다는 의미이다. 이와 같이 시간적인 반복 간격을 주기라고 한다.
