Miranda steps out of the elevator and for the first time we see her head-on. Miranda Priestly, in all her glory. She is stunning, perfectly put together.
엘리베이터 문이 열리고 미란다가 나선다. 처음으로 그녀가 정면으로 보인다. 미란다 프리슬리, 모든 영광을 안고 있는 여자다. 그녀는 멋지고 완벽하다.  
 
MIRANDA: I don't understand why it's so difficult to confirm an appointment.
EMILY: I know, I'm sorry, Miranda. I actually did confirm last night, but....

MIRANDA: Details of your incompetence do not interest me. Tell Simone I'm not going to approve that girl that she sent me for the Brazilian layout. I asked for clean, athletic, smiley. She sent me dirty, tired and paunchy. And R.S.V.P. " yes"  to the Michael Kors party. I want the driver to drop me off at 9:30 and pick me up at 9:45 sharp. Then call Natalie at Glorious Foods and tell her " no"  for the 40th time.

미란다: 이해가 안되는군, 예약 확인하는게 왜 그리 힘드는지.
에밀리: 죄송해요, 미란다. 실은 어젯밤에 확인을 했는데....

미란다: 네 무능함에 대한 변명 따윈 흥미 없어. 사이먼이 보내준 여자로는 브라질 지면에 못 넣겠다고 전해. 청순하고 발랄하고 명랑한 애를 보내랬더니, 추하고 진부하고 똥배 나온 여자를 보냈더군. 그리고 마이클 코어스 파티엔 가겠다고 회답하고 운전사에겐 9시 45분에 날 태우러 오라고 해. 그리고 글로리어스 푸드의 나탈리에게 전화해서 40회 기념으로는 싫다고 전해.
 
Emily jots everything down. We see Andy, watching this, but Miranda seems not to notice her.
에밀리는 모든 것을 메모한다. 앤디가 이것을 지켜보고 있지만 미란다는 그녀의 존재를 알아보지 못하는 것 같다.
 
MIRANDA: No, I don't want dacquoise. I want tortes filled with warm rhubarb compote. Then call my ex-husband and remind him the parent-teacher conference is at Dalton tonight. And then call my husband, ask him to please meet me for dinner...at that place I went to with Massimo.
미란다: 아니, 난 다쿠아스 별로야. 치즈 케익 대신 담황색 과일로 가득찬 토르테 주문해. 그리고 전 남편한테 학부모회가 오느 밤 달턴에서 있다는 걸 상기시켜줘. 지금 남편한텐 마시모하고 갔던 곳에서 내가 함께 식사하잔다고 해.

해설:

드디어 미란다가 처음으로 등장해서 에밀리에게 지시 사항(instruction)을 전달하는 장면이다. I don't understand why it's so difficult to confirm an appointment. I know, I'm sorry, Miranda. I actually did confirm last night, but....얼굴 마사지가 취소된(cancelled) 미란다는 언짢은 기색이다. 에밀리는 고양이 앞의 쥐 마냥 바짝 쫄아서 무서운 상사의 눈치만 살핀다. make an appointment는 사람을 만나는 '약속, 예약'을 할 때 사용하고 make a reservation, book, reserve 등은 '교통 수단, 시설' 사용 등을 예약할 때 사용한다.
 
ex) I'd like to make an appointment with Dr. Lee at 2:00 p.m.(오후 2시에 이 박사님과 약속하고 싶습니다.) My secretary made a reservation with your hotel two weeks ago.(저의 비서가 2주 전에 당신의 호텔에 예약을 했습니다.)
 
영어에는 아버지 이름도 'David'처럼 막 불러대서 존댓말이 없다고 생각하면 큰 오산이다. 조동사 can, will의 과거형인 could, would 등을 사용해서 '존대'를 나타내고 '요청'시 반드시 please를 붙이며 Thank you.와 Sorry 등을 사용해서 '감사'와 '유감'을 빈번하게 나타낸다. ex) Could you open the window for me, please?(저를 위해서 창문을  좀 열어주시겠어요? Would you open the door for me, please?(문 좀 열어 주시겠어요?)

Tell Simone I'm not going to approve that girl that she sent me for the Brazilian layout. 미란다는 차갑게 쏘아붙이고는 극히 사무적으로 에밀리를 대한다. 공격적이고(aggressive) 능력있는(competent) 커리어 우먼의 경우 따스한 배려(consideration)와 팀워크가 부족한 경우가 많지만 회사에서는 이런 부류의 인재를 예상외로(unexpectedly) 선호한다.
 
왜냐하면 공사(official and personal affairs)를 분명히 하는 유형의 매니저가 확실한 실적을 올리는 경우가 많기 때문이다. carrer woman을 발음할 때 '캐리어 우먼'이라고 하는 경우가 있는데, carrier(캐리어)는 porter(짐나르는 사환)이라는 의미이므로, 정확하게 career(커리어)라고 발음해야 한다. 감정 타동사에는 interest(흥미를 일으키다), excite(흥분시키다), satisfy(만족시키다), surpise(놀라게 하다), shock(충격을 주다) 등이 있는데 '감정을 느낄 때'는 수동태를 사용하고 '감정의 원인'이 될 때는 능동태를 사용한다.
 
ex) I am interested in history.(나는 역사에 관심이 있다.) These new books on history might interest you.(역사에 관한 이 새 책들은 당신의 흥미를 끌지도 모른다.)

ex) The tour begins promptly at 10:00 a.m.(투어는 오전 10시 정각에 시작된다.) 거절 할 경우 쉽게 Tell someone " no" 라고 할 수 있다. 상대방의 말에 반대하는 표현을 정리해 보자. I don't agree with you.(전 동의하지 않습니다.) I don't see it that way.(전 그렇게 보지 않습니다.) I have a little different opinion about that.(저는 좀 다른 견해를 가지고 있습니다.) We have diffrent views on this matter.(우리는 이 문제에 대해 견해가 다릅니다.)
