ANDY: Hi.(takes out a note) I...I have an appointment with...Emily Charlton.

EMILY: Andrea Sachs?

ANDY: Yes?

EMILY: Great. Human resources certainly has an odd sense of humor. (sighs, annoyed) Follow me.

앤디: 안녕하세요. (쪽지를 꺼내며) 에밀리 찰튼과 약속이 되어있는데요.

에밀리: 앤드리아 색스?

앤디: 그런데요?

에밀리: 잘 됐네요. 확실히 인사과도 유머 감각이 꽝인가 보네(귀찮은 표정으로 한숨을 쉰다). 따라와요.
 
Emily briskly walks Andy down the hall.

에밀리가 활기차게 앤디를 홀로 안내한다.
 
EMILY: Okay. So I was Miranda's second assistant...but her first assistant recently got promotion and so now I'm the first.

ANDY: Oh, and you're replacing yourself.

EMILY: Well, I'm trying. Miranda sacked the last two girls after only a few weeks. We need to find someone who can survive here. Do you understand?

ANDY: Yeah, of course. Who's Miranda?

EMILY: (eyes widening) Oh, my God. I will pretend you did not just ask me that. She's the editor in chief of Runway, not to mention, a legend. You work a year for her and you can get a job at any magazine you want. A million girls would kill for this job.

ANDY: It sounds like a great opportunity. I'd love to be considered.

에밀리; 좋아요. 난 원래 미란다의 차석 비서였는데 얼마전 수석 비서가 승진해서 내가 수석 비서가 됐어요.

앤디: 아, 당신 혼자 알아서 승진도 하네요.

에밀리: 애쓰고 있지. 미란다는 최근 두 비서를 몇 주 만에 짤라 버렸어요. 우리에겐 여기서 살아남을 사람이 필요하다구요. 알겠어요?

앤디: 네, 물론이에요. 근데 미란다가 누구죠?

에밀리: (눈을 크게 뜨면서) 이런, 지금 그 말 안 들은 걸로 할게요. 그분은 ‘런웨이’의 편집장인데, 패션계의 전설적인 인물임은 말할 것도 없죠. 당신이 그 분 밑에서 일년 정도 일하면 원하는 잡지사 아무데라도 갈 수 있어요. 목숨 걸고 이비서 자리를 노리는 여자들만 수백만이죠.

앤디: 정말 좋은 기회인 거 같은데 긍정적으로 생각해 봐야겠네요.

해설:

구직자인 앤디가 유명한 출판사의 편집부 담당자 에밀리와 대화하는 장면이다.

긴장한(nervous) 에밀리는 초면이라 살짝 더듬는다. 영화 대본은 현실의 반영인지라, 관찰. 분석시 현지영어를 체험할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 약속을 하고 만나는 경우 appointment를 사용한다. 병원에 가기로 예약할 경우에도 make an appointment를 쓴다.
 
ex) I'll make an appointment to see a doctor.(병원 진찰 예약을 할 거야.) see에는 ‘이성 교제하다’는 의미도 있다.
 
ex) Are you seeing someone nowadays?(요즘 사귀는 사람 있니?)
 
Andrea Sachs? Yes? Great. Human resources certainly has an odd sense of humor. Follow me. 에밀리가 본 앤디의 모습은 너무나 촌스러워서(boorish) 실망하고 인사부 탓을 한다. 앤디는 그냥 형식적으로 대한다. ‘인사부’는 Human resources department인데 ‘복합 명사’에서 중간에 s로 끝나는 명사들을 주의해야 한다.
 
electronics company(전자 회사), Customs office(세관), Public relations department(홍보부). sense는 ‘감각’이고 철자가 비슷한 sensation은 ‘흥분’이다.
ex) You have a good business sense.(너는 좋은 사업 감각을 가지고 있다.) I am sure you'll make a great sensation.(너는 분명히 센세이션을 일으킬 것이다.)

promotion에는 ‘승진, 홍보, 판촉’의 의미가 있고 replace는 ‘인사 이동’을 의미한다. 근무지를 말할 때는 work for, 담당 업무를 말할 때는 be in charge of, be responsible for를 사용한다.
 
ex) I'm working for Elias-Clark.(저는 앨리아스-클라크 사에서 일합니다.) I'm in charge of marketing.(제 담당 업무는 마케팅입니다.)

까다로운 미란다는 벌써 몇 주 만에 2명이나 해고했다. 에밀리는 좀 더 오래 버텨줄 직원이 필요한 것이다. 회사에서 ‘해고하다’는 fire, dismiss, lay off, let go 등을 사용한다. sack은 정치권 용어로 ‘숙청하다’는 의미고 구어체로 회사에서 ‘해고하다’인데 미란다의 독재적인 성격을 나타낸다.
 
Do you understand?는 직선적이라서 그리 정중한 표현은 아니다. “알아듣겠어요?”라는 뉘앙스고, ”Is everything clear?"라고 표현하는게 훨씬 예의바르다(polite).
 
A million girls would kill for this job.
 
에밀리는 미란다의 비서 자리야 말로 수백만명의 여성들이 원하는 선망의 대상이라고 선전한다. would kill for는 would die for라고도 표현할 수 있는데, 원작 소설을 보면 It's a job a million girls would die for.라고 나와있다.
