[The Devil Wears Prada] You Pick Up Her Coffee Order on the Way

EMILY: (over the phone) You pick up her coffee order on the way.
ANDY: Now?
에밀리: (전화에서) 오는 길에 커피 좀 사와.
앤디: 지금요?
 
Emily is in a businesslike manner.
에밀리는 사무적이다.
 
EMILY: Now, get a pen and write this down: I want one no foam, skimmed latte... with an extra shot and three drip coffees with room for milk.
에밀리: 자, 펜을 들고 받아적어. 하나는 거품 없는 무지방 우유로 된 라떼 한 잔...한 샷 더 넣은 걸로. 우유 좀 넣게 덜 채운 드립 커피 세 잔.
 
EMILY: (over the phone) Searing hot. And I mean hot.
에밀리: (전화에서) 아주 뜨거운 걸로. 절대 식으면 안 돼.
 
Andy, carrying a Starbucks tray loaded with coffee drinks and snacks, races up the street. Her cell phone rings.
앤디는 커피와 스낵이 담긴 스타벅스 커피점 쟁반을 들고 거리를 달려온다. 휴대 전화가 울린다.
 
ANDY: Hello?
EMILY: (over the phone) Where are you?
ANDY: Oh, I'm almost there. Yeah. (begins to run) Shoot! Oh!
앤디: 여보세요?
에밀리: (전화에서) 도대체 어디야?
앤디: 거의 다 왔어요. 네. (달리기 시작한다.) 이런, 젠장!
 
Miranda is standing by the door to her office as Lucia, a beautiful Brazilian woman who is one of the senior editors, walks in with a fashion assistant, pushing a clothing rail.
미란다는 자신의 사무실 문간에 서 있는데 뒤에는 상급 편집장 중의 하나인 브라질 출신의 아름다운 여자인 루시아가 다른 조수의 도움을 받아 옷걸이를 밀면서 걸어 들어간다.
 
MIRANDA: Is there some reason that my coffee isn't here? Has she died or something?
EMILY: No. (whispers) God....
미란다: 세상에, 내 커피는 언제 오는 거지? 사오다 죽었나?
에밀리: 아뇨, (속삭인다.) 이런.....

Emily panicked. She picks up the phone and begins to dial. At that moment Andy walks in.
에밀리가 잔뜩 겁을 먹고 있다. 그녀는 수화기를 들고 다이얼을 돌리기 시작한다. 바로 그 순간 앤디가 들어온다.
 
EMILY: Oh, about bloody time! I hope you know that this is a very difficult job,,,,
ANDY: Mm-hmm.
에밀리: 빨리도 온다! 이 일이 만만한게 아니란 걸 알아줬으면 해.
앤디: 네.

foam: a mass of tiny bubbles forming on the surface of liquids. 거품

해설: 

솔직한 면접으로 취업에 성공한 앤디가 아침부터 업무를 처리하는 장면이다.

(over the phone) You pick up her coffee order on the way. Now?

에밀리는 아침부터 전화상으로 업부 사항을 전달하는데, 커피 심부름이다. ‘전화상’으로는 on the phone 또는 over the phoned다.
 
‘전화하다’는 talk on(over) the phone, conduct a phone conversation 등을 알아두자. ‘주문하다’는 order인데 place an order라고 할 수 있다.
 
ex) I'd like to place an order for a few items from your fall catalog.(보내주신 가을 상품 카달로그에서 몇 개의 품목을 주문하고 싶은데요.)
 
명령문은 You가 생략된 형태이므로 항상 동사 원형으로 시작한다. 따라서 Pick up her coffee order.라고 말해도 좋다. 명령을 할 때는 should, must, need to 등을 사용할 수도 있는데, need to가 ‘~가 필요하다’는 의미 외에도 ‘명령’의 의미가 있다는 점을 알아두자.
 
ex) I need you to pick up her coffee.(그녀의 커피를 찾아오세요.)

에밀리는 지극히 사무적으로 앤디는 대한다. 커피 심부름이지만 미란다가 마실 커피이므로 중요한 업무다.
 
‘메모하다’는 write down, take down, note down, jot down 등을 사용한다. 전화에서 “메모 좀 남기시겠어요?“는 Do you want to leave your message?라고 한다.
 
콜론(:)은  피리어드(period)와 세미콜론의 중간 정도의 절단력을 가진 구두점이지만, 현재에는 '즉(that is to say)'의 뜻으로 쓰는 것이 보통이다.
 
ex) These are the main exports: iron, copper, wheat, and cotton.
 
뉴토익에서는 세미콜론(;)의 용법이 중요한데, 접속사 역할을 하고 접속 부사(therefore, otherwise, however,then, etc)가 그 뒤에 올 수 있다.
 
It is too early; therefore, call me back later. (너무 이른 시간이다; 그러므로 나중에 다시 전화 걸어라.)
 
영어로 말하기는 처음부터 생각을 많이 할 필요가 없다. 단문으로 짧게 말하고 생각이 추가 되면 I mean를 사용해서 구체적으로 첨가해 나가면 된다.
 
ex) Buy me a cup of coffee. I mean at Strbucks. (커피 한단 사주세요. 스타벅스에서요.)
